October 4, 2016

As a girl living in a tropical country, you can just imagine how envious I am of people who get to experience fall. I have never experienced it but it’s already my most favorite season. Everything just seems to be so pretty and the vibe is just so laid-back. The weather’s just right — it’s not boiling hot and you’re not freezing to death. It’s just so sad that I have to go to another country just to be able to wear the unbelievable amount of outerwear I have and pair it with the cutest socks and boots and plaids. Too hipster? I couldn’t care less.

It is — for me — the start of the best months of the year. The weather’s finally starting to be bearable, my birthday’s just a month away, and the sales are amazing. Fall clothes are my absolute favorite. It has me written all over it. If I could, I would wear autumn clothes all year long. But we’re not #blessed with autumn, and we’re most definitely not #blessed with the best weather either. It’s not stopping me though, every chance I get, I grab it to layer and wear my outerwear. And even though it seems like we’re stuck in a perpetual summer with some rain here and there, I still like buying clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories from the fall collection of clothing brands from the US. Here, I share with you the things I think you should always make sure to have in your possession when October hits.

First things first, I’m someone who spends her spare time browsing through online stores. I have a file folder on my laptop that contains saved images of clothes that I want to buy online (or in-store if the brand is available locally), or clothing styles that I want to copy. The most frustrating part for me is when I’m lusting over something and I’m more than ready to buy it only to find out that they don’t ship to the Philippines or that I have to go through so much hassle just to pick up my package from the post office. When I shop online, I want to be able to do everything within the comforts of my bed — from adding things to my cart, paying with my credit card, and ultimately just waking up days after with the package having already arrived at my front door. I hate having to pay an unbelievable amount for overseas shipping fee only to be informed that I still have to pick it up at the post office. Hassle.

Good things come to those who wait, they said, and true enough, I came across Uskoop, an online shopping portal that “allows an online shopper to ‘tell us what you want to buy’ instead of what we want to sell to you’,” with three easy steps: (1) search for products that you want to buy from their Top Global Merchants on the internet, (2) copy the URL of the product that you want to buy and paste it at the Uskoop site, and (3) checkout and with a single fixed price, have the product delivered straight to your home. Finally, the freedom to choose from over 10 million products from Amazon, Macys, Walmart, Zappos, and more! I cannot believe my luck!

The possibilities of the stuff that I can (and want to) buy seemed endless but none of us are certainly made of money, so I’m narrowing our October must-haves down to five.

Jacket. I’ve said over and over that I am a huge fan of outerwear. Nevermind that it doesn’t snow, much less experience a 25-degree Celsius for more than two weeks, from where I live. This October, Forever 21’s Ruched Bomber Jacket is perfect because it’s lightweight and it’s made of polyester so it’s perfect for when it starts to drizzle. Don’t let the rain rain on your parade — walk on puddles looking fine and chic.

Ankle boots. I’ve never went through October-December without seeing at least one person wearing boots. While it’s totally absurd to wear thigh high boots in Manila, it’s actually acceptable to wear ankle boots. It’s both cool girl and street chic. Wearing boots, no matter the length, just never fails to give that autumn vibe regardless of where you are in the world. Even if I do get to experience snow, I think I will always prefer ankle boots because it won’t make me look shorter than I already am. Yay!

Socks. There was a phase in my life (lol, it was just two years ago) that I kept buying socks. They were just so cute! I bought so much that I still haven’t even used some of it from my haul. Nevertheless, socks are essential for keeping our feet cozy for when it rains or when the universe decides to #bless us with a decent temperature. (Also, who doesn’t use socks when they wear sneakers/closed shoes???) If you’re into fall fashion (like me), socks look good with ankle boots. And, they double as Instagram props. Win-win!

Stylish dress. We’ve heard it many times, “every girl should have a little black dress“. What only a few have heard though is, “every girl should also have a stylish dress,” one that’s trendy — whether it has a funky print or an asymmetrical cut, you should have at least one. It’s for those days when you don’t feel like putting in so much effort trying to think of a killer top-and-bottom combo but you still want to look like you’re killing it. We’ve all had those days when it feels like we’re stuck in a rut with our clothes, feeling like everything in our closet suddenly seemed basic — this dress will be your savior. Repeat after me, stressed but well-dressed in my killer dress.

Fujifilm Instax Wide 210. If you’re a student, sem break is fast approaching; if you’re employed, invites to Halloween parties, and reunions are starting to pop up in your inbox; and if you’re like me who’s taking a gap year to wander wherever, an instant camera will be one of the best things you’ll ever spend your money on. We live in a time where we want to have everything in an instant, and I really think that instant cameras were invented just for that. Personally, I find the Instax Wide 210 better than Instax Mini 8 (and the Instax Wide 300 — it’s too bulky!) because landscapes look so much better and it covers more surface. Particularly handy for when you want to take a scenic shot of the beach or a group picture. I especially love Fujifilm’s instant cameras because their products are available locally but buying films for it can be a huge headache. It’s either they don’t have it in stock or they sell it for a higher price. It’s not just that, some even sell the unit for an unbelievably high amount. (See picture above). It’s almost half the price of the one from Uskoop that already comes with 3 sets of 10-pieces of film!

I’ve already introduced you guys to my new found buddy that is Uskoop, and I just want you all to know how much fun I’ve had exploring the site and coming up with this list. Although there are enough online stores available locally to last us a decade, most of them still don’t carry that cute top we found on an online store that *gasps in horror* doesn’t ship worldwide. Not to worry though, because Uskoop will take care of it! You only have to tell them what you want to buy and they will take care of everything — from shopping for and shipping your stuff with prices that are inclusive of shipping fee, customs and taxes with insurance (!!!) without having to worry about US sales tax because you don’t have to pay it, and not using a US shipping address because you don’t need to have one. What’s more is that your parcel will be delivered straight to your doorstep wherever you are in the Philippines in just 10-15 days! HOW AWESOME IS THAT. (For more information about Uskoop, visit their site here, and if you haven’t already, follow them on Instagram and Facebook)

WAIT, THERE’S MORE. How about 10% off on shipping and handling? Yes? Heard ya. Use this discount code: USKOOPTEN% to get it! Again, awesome.

With these five things in my arsenal, I’m pretty sure that the last remaining months of this year will be a blast. What are your October must-haves? And have you ever experienced wanting to buy something only to find out it’s not available locally? 🙂

Hii!! I love the illustrations. If you don’t mind, can I ask how did you do the edits (outline thingy) on the first picture. That edit’s been around the internet lately ☺️ Thanksss

    • Reply Pia November 4, 2016 at 7:33 am

Thanks, Bea! I edited it using Photoshop. I first selected the area I will outline and then I created a new layer and then I used “stroke” (it’s found in the “Edit” tab). After that, I just used the transform tool to move the outline around and to adjust the size. 🙂 I used the idea behind this tutorial: http://photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/outline/outline.htm Hope I helped! <3
